Write alt text for images

Two kinds of image issue

• This image is missing alt text in Shopify. The image in your admin, such as a product photo, has no description. The fix writes one. This is an Alt text fix.
• This template's code doesn't output image alt text. The theme shows the image but drops its description, so even described images reach the page without one. This is a Code fix to the template. See Fix issues in your theme code.

Review the drafted description

Open the issue. SiteRemora looks at the image and drafts a short description under Suggested description.

• Edit the text until it describes the image well. Regenerate writes a new draft.
• The panel lists the Shopify records that use this image. One file can sit on several products, collections or uploads. Applying writes the description onto all of them.
• Edit product in admin opens the product, if you'd rather work there.

Click Apply Fix to write the description to Shopify. It's recorded on the Fixes page. Reverting it restores the description the image had before.

Images in your theme files

Some images live in the theme rather than your catalog, such as a banner uploaded with the theme. For those, the description goes into the Liquid that renders the image.

Many images at once

Images missing descriptions are grouped together. Fix All drafts and applies a description for every image in the group. Read them on the Fixes page, and revert any you'd word differently.

What makes good alt text

• Describe what the image shows, in 5 to 15 words: tan tote bag with short handles on a pale gray background.
• Leave out "image of" or "photo of". Screen readers announce that already.
• For a logo, use the brand name followed by "logo".
