What we plan to cover next

The WCAG 2.1 AA ground we intend to cover over time, in the order we expect to get there. What is covered today is on the coverage page. There are no dates here; items move as the scan data shows us where stores fail most.

after that

Things the browser can measure today that need a fix pattern per theme before we write to the code. Until the pattern exists they are reported with evidence.

  • Page regions marked from the theme's own sectionsThe main, header and footer regions are identified from the section groups that render them. Once the pattern holds across common themes, autopilot's Full mode applies it again.WCAG 1.3.1
  • Focus styles the theme removedMeasured in the browser on every control, then restored in the theme's base stylesheet in a color that passes against the brand background.WCAG 2.4.7
  • Menus, drawers, modals and option pickers the keyboard cannot reachThe scan walks each page with the keyboard. Unreachable controls are reported with the section that renders them; sections that follow a known pattern are fixed, custom ones go to the developer.WCAG 2.1.1
  • Drawers and pop-ups that trap focusA panel that swallows the keyboard is reported with the script that opened it and the key that should close it.WCAG 2.1.2
  • Slideshows and videos that start on their ownAnything that moves for more than five seconds without a control is reported; a pause control is added to the section and the operating system's reduced-motion setting is honoured.WCAG 2.2.2
  • Audio that starts on its ownSound that plays for more than three seconds without a control is reported, with a pause control added where the player allows it.WCAG 1.4.2
  • Form errors a screen reader does not announceError messages are tied to their field and announced, in the theme's own form sections.WCAG 3.3.1
  • Error text that says what to doA message that says a field is wrong without saying what would be right is reported with a suggested wording.WCAG 3.3.3
  • Icons, input borders and focus rings with too little contrastMeasured the way text is measured today, and reported with the ratio and a screenshot.WCAG 1.4.11
  • Pages that break at 320 pixels wideEach page is rendered narrow; horizontal scrolling and clipped content are reported with the screenshot.WCAG 1.4.10
  • Text that clips when spacing is widenedEach page is rendered with the WCAG spacing override; overlapping or cut-off text is reported with the screenshot.WCAG 1.4.12
  • Pages that only work one way upRendered in portrait and landscape; a page that locks or breaks in one of them is reported.WCAG 1.3.4
  • Countdown timers and timed offersSale countdowns and sessions that cut a shopper off are reported where there is no way to extend or turn them off.WCAG 2.2.1
later

Items we are confident we can detect and less sure we can fix without a person. They are on the list because the scan already sees enough of the page to find them.

  • Mega menus and tooltips that cannot be dismissed or hoveredContent that appears on hover or focus is checked for dismiss, hover and persist behavior.WCAG 1.4.13
  • Navigation that changes from page to pageBecause the scan sees every page, it can compare the header, the footer and the names of shared controls across them and report where they drift.WCAG 3.2.3
  • The same control named differently on different pagesA search field called Search on one page and Find on another is reported as one item.WCAG 3.2.4
  • Tab order that disagrees with the visual orderThe order the keyboard reaches controls is compared with where they sit on the page.WCAG 2.4.3
  • Controls that change the page as soon as they receive focusA link or field that navigates or opens something on focus alone is reported with the script behind it.WCAG 3.2.1
  • Carousels and galleries that need a swipeAnything that only works with a drag or a two-finger gesture gets buttons; actions that fire on press rather than release are reported.WCAG 2.5.1
  • Single-key shortcuts in theme scriptsA letter key bound without a modifier is reported, with the script that binds it.WCAG 2.1.4
  • Stores with one way to find a pageA store with no search and no navigable collection list is told so, with the two ways most themes offer.WCAG 2.4.5
  • Pictures of wordsBanners and buttons made of text baked into an image are found by reading the image and sent to the designer with the words transcribed.WCAG 1.4.5
  • Passages in another languageText in a language other than the page's is found and marked with its language in the Liquid where the content is in the theme; in product copy it is reported.WCAG 3.1.2
  • Flashing animationsMovement that flashes more than three times a second is reported from the rendered page.WCAG 2.3.1
  • Problems that came with an installed appEach finding is traced to the app that injected it, with a note you can send to that vendor.WCAG various
  • Videos without captions or audio descriptionFound and listed with their owner. The captions themselves stay with the people who made the video.WCAG 1.2.x
checks that need a person

Criteria where the answer depends on your brand or on what the content means. The scan measures them and a person makes the call; where the call is a value, like a color, we write the chosen value into the theme.

  • Text and background colorsMeasured against the required ratio, with the nearest passing shade of your color suggested. You keep it or pick another, and the color you choose is written into the theme.WCAG 1.4.3
  • Whether the reading order means the same as the visual orderReported for a person to read, because meaning is a judgment.WCAG 1.3.2
  • Instructions that rely on shape, color or position aloneFlagged where the words are found; the rewrite is yours.WCAG 1.3.3
  • Whether a heading says what its section is aboutEmpty and duplicate headings are fixed; whether the words are the right words is a reading judgment.WCAG 2.4.6
  • Mistakes in orders and legal commitmentsCheckout belongs to Shopify, where an order can be reviewed and corrected before it is placed; forms in the theme that commit a shopper to something are reported.WCAG 3.3.4
also on the list

Product work that keeps the fixes above alive once they are in.

  • A theme update that undoes a fix is noticed on the next check and offered back with one click.
  • An accessibility statement drafted from your scan record, with the known problems and the dates filled in.
  • A per-app view of what each installed app adds to the page, so the vendor conversation starts with evidence.
