Find what pasting left in product descriptions
Enter a Shopify store’s address. The checker reads every product description in its public catalog and lists the headings, links, images and lists a screen reader stumbles on, product by product.
Why descriptions drift
A theme can be built carefully and its product pages can still read badly. Descriptions are written by whoever adds the product, often pasted from a document or a supplier’s sheet, and the editor keeps the formatting that came with them: bold lines in place of headings, typed bullets in place of lists, empty paragraphs for spacing.
Each one is small. Across a catalog they decide whether a shopper using a screen reader can skim a product page by its headings and lists the way everyone else skims it by eye.
More on this in the Field Log: how a clean Shopify store slips in a quarter.
What the checker reads
It asks the store’s Storefront API for each product’s description, for products published to the online store, up to the first 1,000. The requests go from your browser straight to the store, and the results stay on this page. Add ?store= and an address to the page link to share a result.
It reads the description itself. The theme around it, reviews and app widgets show up on the rendered page, which is where SiteRemora checks them. Whether a heading is worded well takes a person to judge.
