Write alt text for your whole catalog in one place
Drop in your Shopify product export. Write a description beside each image that needs one, then download a file to import back, with only the alt text changed.
In the Shopify admin: Products, Export, All products, Plain CSV file. Choose it here or drop it on this box. It stays in your browser.
Importing it back
- Keep the export you started from. It is your backup, because a Shopify import cannot be undone.
- In the Shopify admin, open Products and select Import. Add the test file, check Overwrite products with matching handles, select Upload and continue, then Import products.
- Open that product and check that every image is there in its order, with its new alt text, and that its variants and prices look right.
- Import the file with all your changes the same way.
The download holds only the products you changed, with every column exactly as exported and only Image Alt Text edited. Anything changed in the admin since the export, such as a price or a stock count, goes back to the exported value for those products, so import soon after you export.
Editing here also keeps the file out of a spreadsheet program, which can quietly reformat barcodes, SKUs and prices.
Writing them well
Describe what each picture shows in 5 to 15 words, and give every angle its own description. Leave out “image of”; screen readers say that already. The alt text checker shows how a store stands before and after.
SiteRemora drafts each description from the picture itself, writes it to Shopify once you approve it, and checks new products as they arrive. More free checks are on the free tools page.

Install from the App Store. The first scan is free, takes about a minute, and tells you exactly where you stand.
