accessibility statement

Write an accessibility statement for your store

Answer a few questions and get a statement in the shape the W3C’s guidance describes: the standard you work to, where you stand, what is open, and how to reach you, ready for a Shopify page.

The details

Everything stays in your browser. Nothing is saved or sent.

Your store

Optional, like yourstore.com.

Standard
Where the store stands
Known problems

Like: Product filters can't be used with a keyboard on collection pages. Fix planned for December.

What you have done

Optional.

Contact

Optional.

Dates and scope

Your statement

  • Add your store name. The statement shows [Store name] until you do.
  • Add an email address a person reads. A statement needs a way to reach you.

Accessibility statement

[Store name] wants everyone to be able to shop here, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard or magnification.

Standard and status

We work to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2, Level AA. This store is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 AA, which means some parts do not fully meet the standard yet.

Known problems

We are still checking the store, and we list each problem here as we find it, with where it is and when it will be fixed.

What we have done

  • We check the store with automated accessibility scans every week.
  • We describe product images with alt text, so their content reaches people who cannot see them.

Contact us

If something on this store gets in your way, email [email address]. A person reads every message, and we reply within 2 business days.

If you would rather not use the website, we can help you place your order by email.

Publishing it

  1. In the Shopify admin, add a new page titled Accessibility statement. Your theme shows that title as the page’s main heading, so the statement starts one level below it.
  2. Select Show HTML in the page’s content toolbar, paste the statement, and save.
  3. Add the page to your footer menu, beside your privacy policy. If you sell into the EU, link to it from your terms of service too.
  4. Review it at least once a year, and whenever a problem on the list is fixed.

A statement is only as good as it is true. Choosing partially conformant and listing what is open reads as more credible than a clean claim, and a dated record of the work is what helps when a demand letter arrives. More in the Field Log: what to put in an accessibility statement.

SiteRemora keeps the list of known problems current, scanning the store and recording each fix with its date, which is the part of a statement that goes stale first. More free checks are on the free tools page.
