Non-text Content
Every meaningful image, icon and image button has a text description, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers.
Who it affects
People who use a screen reader hear the description in place of the picture. Without one, they hear a file name or nothing at all, and a product photo or an icon-only button tells them nothing.
What a scan checks
- Images with no alt attribute, on every page a scan loads, hidden pop-ups included.
- Images with an empty alt that carry content, such as a product photo or a banner, while small icons beside their own text are left alone.
- Alt text that repeats the product title instead of describing the picture.
- Image files that no longer load, with the template that asks for them.
How it gets fixed
- For a catalog image, a description is drafted from the photo and saved to the product, collection or file after you approve it, so it follows the image into every theme and channel.
- For a theme image, the alt is written into the Liquid that renders it, with the words you approve.
- For an image in a blog post or page, the description is saved into that post or page.
Every change is shown before it is applied, recorded with the code it replaced, and reverts in one click.
