Contrast (Minimum)

Text is at least 4.5:1 against its background, or 3:1 for large text.

Who it affects

People with low vision, older shoppers, and anyone reading a phone in sunlight. Light gray text on white is the most common failure on Shopify stores.

What a scan checks

  • Every piece of text against the background it sits on, with the measured and required ratios.
  • Text over a photo or gradient, measured where the picture behind the words is lightest or darkest.
  • Theme color settings that fail before any page does.

How it gets fixed

  • You pick the color. SiteRemora shows the closest shade of your own color that passes, saves it to a palette in its stylesheet in your theme, and offers it everywhere else the same colors meet.
  • Text over a picture gets a see-through backdrop just strong enough to pass, and the picture stays as it is.

Every change is shown before it is applied, recorded with the code it replaced, and reverts in one click.

Before and after, on real stores

Found by our scanner on live Shopify stores and fixed in a test browser with the same change the app makes. The stores are described rather than named, and their names are taken out of the code.

A green sale price on white

An aquarium plant and shrimp shop on Streamline

Before
A crossed-out regular price and a sale price in bright green on white.
After
The same prices, with the sale price in a slightly deeper green.

The sale price was #009b2c on white, 3.66:1, under the 4.5:1 that text this size needs. The closest shade of the same green that passes is #008726. The merchant keeps the choice of color, and the same green can be applied everywhere else it fails in one step.
